Why Global Studies

The B.A. in Global Studies (GLST) is for students interested in:

  • local and global impacts of globalization
  • improving people’s lives through sustainable development
  • contemporary cultures and working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • geopolitics and international affairs
  • global security
  • focusing their coursework on a major world region such as the Middle East or Latin America
  • travel, tourism, and global heritage

Thematic Emphasis

Students obtaining the B.A. in Global Studies choose one thematic emphasis for their coursework:

  • Culture, the Arts and Humanities
  • Geopolitics and the Global Economy
  • Global Sustainability

Students have many options for selecting courses to fulfill their thematic emphasis.

Skill Option

Students also choose at least one skill to advance their career preparation. Skill options include:

  • a foreign language
  • a course in GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
  • a course in Fieldwork/data collection
  • a course in spatial analysis

 Study Abroad Possibilities

Students will have the option to fulfill course requirements abroad by either following a traditional semester study abroad path through the Oklahoma State Study Abroad Office or by enrolling in shorter one-two week courses led by department faculty.

 Internship Opportunity

As seniors, students take a Senior Capstone course and have the option to complete an internship and get real-world job experience.
