The School of Global Studies and Partnerships and Departments of Geography and Political Science are hosting a Global Studies Briefing on Tuesday, February 5 at 6 PM in the Wes Watkins Center.
The featured speaker is Rt. Hon. Henry McLeish, the former First Minister of Scotland. The title of the talk is "Brexit: An Epic Act of Self-Harm or an Opportunity for a New Identity for the UK?"
The Right Honourable Henry McLeish, a retired professional soccer player and former First Minister of Scotland, has played a key part in Scotland’s emerging role on the European and world stage and implemented many of Scotland’s social and economic policies.
As Minister for Devolution and Home Affairs at the Scottish Office from 1997 to 1999, McLeish was instrumental in shaping Scotland’s first Parliament in nearly 300 years. He was then elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999, where he served as Minister for Enterprise and Life Long Learning, overseeing higher education, industry, science, technology and the economy.
In the past decade, McLeish has been a visiting professor and lecturer at many universities in the U.S., including at the University of Arkansas, Edinburgh University and the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, with courses focusing on European Union studies and UK Government and Politics. McLeish is currently a Visiting Professor of European Studies at the University of St. Mary’s School of Law, in San Antonio, Texas.
